Forklift Careers – How To Get The Forklift Job You Want

When attempting to get a job as a forklift operator there are several things you want to make sure you have in order. Keep in mind, you will be competing with other operators who might have more experience than you, might have specialized training, or be willing to work for less pay. Given all of this you will want to make sure you have your proverbial ducks in a row when first starting your job and attempting to make a career out of being a forklift operator.  We will discuss several key points here.

Generally speaking, here are some typical minimal requirements when employers are looking for a new forklift operator:

- Minimally, one year of recent experience.   This can be a tough one if you are just learning the ropes of how to drive a forklift. That age old question comes into play as in how are you supposed to gain experience if no one will give you a chance? However, the one year requirement is a loose one, and many employers will bend this rule if you have other qualifications they are looking for.  The only downside, with the recession, there are a lot of experienced operators who have been laid off at other jobs and so the competition is quite tough.

- You must be able to provide a current and valid drivers license.  This one, employers won’t budge on. If you have had your drivers license taken away for any reasons, you need to consider another occupation because you won’t get a job driving a forklift with an invalid drivers license.

- You need to have a clean driving record. This sort of relates to the drivers license issue above. From an employer’s perspective, if you have had auto accidents, speeding tickets, or DUI’s, then you are bad risk to be driving a forklift on their property. In their mind, you could hurt one of their other workers or cause accidents which will cost them money.  Having a clean driving record is an absolute must – if you don’t have one, again, look for another job in another industry.

- You need to provide a valid forklift certification, usually one issued within the last two years or so. If you don’t have this, you can certainly obtain one rather easily by searching for a nearby school and paying a few hundred dollars.

- Finally, you need to be able to demonstrate an ability to operate different kinds of forklifts, and show an ability to stack, move, or organize products with your lift.

When all is said and done have a forklift career can be very rewarding for you and your family. The pay is adequate and the job can be rewarding. You just need to follow the tips about and you will join the many people in the country that have great forklift careers.
